I’m obviously not alone in worrying about the Common Core Curriculum Standards’ use of the word “text” instead of “book”, nor about my fears of the potential of literature being reduced to test fodder.
On October 21st scores of children’s book authors united to write and sign an open letter to President Obama in FairTest, the National Center for Fair and Open Testing. The letter quotes Philip Pullman who says: “We are creating a generation that hates reading and feels nothing but hostility for literature.” It’s signed by a long list of noteworthy authors. Read the entire letter, view its concerned signers and share the outrage. http://www.fairtest.org/
