Mylisa Larsen’s QUAGMIRE TIARELLO COULDN’T BE BETTER begins with a hero who is troubled, let’s us watch him get in trouble and alerts us to the fact that his mother is the trouble—she suffers with mental illness. This book is one of several I’ve seen that picture children with mad mothers and dealing with foster homes. And yet….all the hard realities present in the first two-thirds is beautifully countered by a lyrical, tender, redemptive last third.
