Olivia Abtahi’s THE INTERPRETER really begins on the cover as pictures by Monica Arnaldo shows a young girl adjusting a tie. Cecilia has two jobs—being a child and interpreting the world for her Spanish-speaking parents. Good naturedly she translates at the doctor’s, the DMV, a hair salon. Arnaldo’s illustrations measure the emotions of exhaustion while showing the already oversized suit becoming larger until it all becomes too much for her and she erupts, an event measured by the double-paged spread of appeal in Spanish and English.
