I AM THE SWARM, written and read by Hayley Chewins

Hayley Chewins reads her novel, I AM THE SWARM, in quiet tones balancing the extremity of Nell’s family’s gift and curse—all the young women receive their magic at aged 15. Her mother shifts ages from one day to the next and her sister uses cutting to let out music that flows in her veins. Chewins’ South African soft accents and the stresses of her verse’s rhythms are calming as Nell is suddenly surrounded by swarms of insects that reveal her emotions—ladybugs when she’s joyfully playing piano and wasps when she’s angry. Chewin’s neutrality in reading somehow makes the evocative imagery and the ongoing abuse and disturbing family dynamics more powerful. Though Chewin allows us to feel the unpredictability that surrounds Nell, we cheer her courage and ownership of her true self.
