OUR GUNCLE written by Stephen Rowley and illustrated by Eda Kaban
Stephen Rowley’s OUR GUNCLE is a poignant story of grief. Grant and Maisie go to visit their recently deceased mother’s brother, or as she called him GUP (for Gay Uncle Patrick) in Palm Springs. Everything seems new from palm trees to his glass house with a butterfly roof. What’s common to them all is the sorrows they carry for Patrick has lost a not just his sister, but someone he loved. Nothing works to heal them—a pool crowded with colorful floats, chocolate shakes, or a zoo visit. Illustrator Eda Kaban shows shifting moods as for example the kids note a road runner who can’t run and seems “sad like them.” In big and small ways, the three forge new paths toward love and healing together..
