THE GREATEST BEDTIME STORY EVER written and illustrated by Jessie Sima
One of my favorite things about writer-illustrator Jessie Sima is that she always finds an intriguing perspective, a fascinating premise that makes me think. She fulfills all in her newest THE GREATEST BEDTIME STORY EVER. An elf, who fancies himself a storyteller extraordinaire, finds his way into the cave of a fire-breathing dragon who is roaring with sleep and needs a bedtime snack, our hero writes and illustrates a story that when read aloud puts the dragon to sleep. All is well until he realizes that he’s left his story behind and MUST retrieve it. That is his fatal error, or perhaps it’s that he steps on a bone (a clue to storytellers who have gone before) which cracks, wakes the dragon, and the elf finds himself not surrounded by fame, but the dragon’s innards. One of the very best things about this book is the tension that makes it a great read-aloud, though timid children might be a bit nervous along the narrative path.
