ZIP ZAP WICKETY WACK: A STORY ABOUT SHARING written and illustrated by Matthew Diffee
Writer-illustrator Matthew Diffee gives children a very different, fun to read and experience view of sharing in ZIP ZAP WICKETY WACK: A STORY ABOUT SHARING. The book begins with what seems like a toddler book of animal soundmaking, but suddenly there’s a fracas in the farmyard as sheep and goat both say “baa.” As if the animals don’t have it confused enough, the sheep comes up with a strange sound to call his own, “zip zap wickety wack wing ding dilly flip flap yackety yack wing ding dilly.” Just as that solution seems viable, an alien appears from nowhere and he says the same thing. (This leads to a delightful repeat of the nonsense phrase.) He suggests sharing or wiffling, as they call it on its home…though of course he is completely unable to put philosophy into practice. This read-aloud book focuses much more on surprise and tension and attitude and humor than the lesson of sharing which comes across without lecture or finger wagging.
