AGGIE AND THE GHOST written and illustrated by Matthew Forsythe
I love a book that escapes sweetness and cliché like Matthew Forsythe’s AGGIE AND THE GHOST. In it he invents two characters, that are incredibly well-rounded for a picture book, neither one of them is totally likeable. Aggie is a girl who likes order and is delighted to move into a house alone until she discovers a non-rule following ghost has taken up residence. Their dialogue paints pictures of their characters as do the illustrations that add a wit and playfulness that avoid any kind of pat easy answers in a book where subtlety allows illustrations and words to speak more loudly than a didactic-driven point.
