CASEY’S CASES: THE MYSTERIOUS NEW GIRL by Kay Healy
Kay Healy’s debut graphic novel begins a new series for children who are new to reading and the graphic novel format. CASEY’S CASES’ first title is THE MYSTERIOUS NEW GIRL. Healy’s comic illustrations feature a young girl who believes she’s much cleverer than she really is and that’s where the text humor enters. The chapters are short, the speech balloons easy to read, the blocks that contain them clear and easy to decipher. The commonplace becomes mysterious in Casey’s view and that silliness adds to non-dramatic sleuthing like recovering a lost hair band and turning the new girl into a friend. Some of the situations and humor will be missed by younger readers, but this also serves as an excellent playful go-to for children who are more reluctant readers.
