Death in the Jungle

DEATH IN THE JUNGLE: MURDER, BETRAYAL, AND THE LOST DREAM OF JONESTOWN , written by Candace Fleming, audio read by Karen Murray

DEATH IN THE JUNGLE: MURDER, BETRAYAL, AND THE LOST DREAM OF JONESTOWN is another incredible longer nonfiction by Candace Fleming which I both read and listened to Karen Murray read it. Karen Murray’s balanced reading fits the non-fiction recounting of Jim Jones and tragedy of the Peoples Temple. Her measured tones reflect the well-researched audio, beginning with Jones’ early religious energetic zeal that captured the imagination of his followers. Murray’s reading builds facts, people and anecdotes, setting the scenes as Jones nurtures trust based on his belief in socialism’s justice. Later in the audio, Murray’s narration of dialogue picks up emotions and force as situations in Jonestown, Guyana become desperate when Jones descends into drug use and brutality. This poignant audio while never gratuitous brings listeners into the center of what it felt like to be in a cult that led to the death of 909 members. While it is an uncomfortable listen, its telling is remarkable and haunting.  You can find out more about this book and audio at the purchase link below.
