LIES ON THE SERPENT’S TONGUE written by Kate Pearsall and read by Andi Marie Tillman
Andi Marie Tillman reads Kate Pearsall’s LIES ON THE SERPENT’S TONGUE, a companion to BITTERSWEET IN THE HOLLOW. This second is expressed from the vantage point of Rowan James, a minor character in the first book. Tillman’s soft Southern accent aids in setting the Appalachian setting. She communicates the sarcasm that makes sense for a teenaged Rowan who can smell lies on those around her. Her distrust of Hadrian, the family’s farm worker, is particularly strong. Tillman pictures scenes of Rowan’s rage, a ferocity relieved by working in the woods for the Forest Service. There Tillman’s narration calms allowing the beautiful lyricism of the audio to shine and listeners to understand the link of magical forces operating against the very real background of threatening ginseng poachers. Tillman marvelously melds fantastical and real, highlighted in the slow burn romance of Rowan and Hadrian’s supernatural romance.
