Medicine Wheels

MEDICINE WHEELS written by Byron Graves and read by Meegwun Fairbrother

MEDICINE WHEELS is written by Ojibwe writer Byron Graves and Ojibwe actor Meegwun Fairbrother narrates the story about an Ojibwe protagonist. 15-year-old Bryce lives far from the Wolf Creek reservation on which he was born and lived happily until his father’s death. Fairbrother expresses Bryce’s fear and anger while living a shadowy existence with his drug addicted mother and her abusive boyfriend. When Bryce’s mother is imprisoned for drugs, he returns to live with his grandmother and dying grandfather in Wolf Creek. Fairbrother uses accents judiciously and evocatively to ground listeners in the strength and caring of his grandparents and elders. Similarly, Fairbrother shows the support of Bryce’s old friends who welcome him into the skateboard passion his father once had. Fairbrother and Graves give a unique portrait of a Native American boy who finds himself by living fully in the love, grief and activism that surround him.
