Rhea's Rodeo

RHEA’S RODEO written by Laekan Zea Kemp and illustrated by Raissa Figueroa

Writer Laekan Zea Kemp and illustrator Raissa Figueroa give us the story of one girl’s passions in RHEA’S RODEO. The backmatter gives context to Escaramuza, the only female event in Mexican Rodeo, where girls “perform synchronized routines on horseback.” It also provides a glossary and pronunciation of the many Spanish words in the story as well as labeling and detailing of the costume. All of this will aid the reading, but the best aid is Rhea herself. A proud young girl who suffers a large disappointment when her team doesn’t win, but knows she’s done her best which her her abuela tells her is a trophy that is “too big to hold.” You can find a link to this book in the purchase button below.
