Maria Van Lieshout’s graphic novel SONG OF A BLACKBIRD swings lyrically back and forth between two periods of history and two brave girls. In 2011, Annick seeks to find a donor match for her beloved Oma who’s suffering from cancer. Her quest connects to the 1943 occupied-Amsterdam world of Anna who draws portraits of important buildings, prints of which hang on Annick’s Oma’s walls. Emma faces large quandaries as well as she seeks to save two Jewish children from the Nazis and her collaboration with other young resistance fighters.
