THE BEAT I DRUM written by Dusti Bowling and read by Matt Godfrey
Matt Godfrey narrates Dusti Bowling’s THE BEAT I DRUM, the third in the INSIGNIFICANT EVENTS IN THE LIFE OF A CACTUS series. While the first two books focus on Aven Green, a determined girl born without arms, the third focuses on Connor Bradley, a secondary character in the previous stories. Matt Godfrey narrates the emotionally-charged story of Connor Bradley, immediately showing Connor’s sarcastic point of view as he describes his recent move and anticipatory stress of attending into a new high school with Tourette syndrome. Godfrey soon shows an additional concern as Connor’s estranged father reenters his life and Godfrey recounts the painful remembered hurt of his father telling him “Stop it!” as if he could control his tics and barks. Hardships are balanced with positives as Godfrey depicts the tenderness of a music teacher who helps him find healing through music and friends with differences who accept him warmly. Godfrey’s narration makes this a believable empathetic journey with a satisfying finale.Find a link to this book and the audio in the purchase button below.
