The Color of a Lie

THE COLOR OF A LIE written by Kim Johnson and read by Kevin R. Free

Kim Johnson’s THE COLOR OF A LIE finds African American teenager, Calvin Greene, unhappily moved to a predominately white Pennsylvania community in 1953 where his father has decided the family will improve their lives by passing white. The audio read by Kevin R. Free represents accurately the tension that comes from Calvin Greene’s mix of paranoia and anger as his African-American family moves to pass in a segregated Pennsylvania community in 1955. Free also measures the longing Kevin feels for his sister killed by racial violence, his best friend, estranged brother and playing jazz. Free shows how Calvin’s disgust for the spoiled white students, who seek to include him, grows to animosity and fierce protection of Lily, a new student integrating the school. As his caring for Lily grows, so does Free’s voicing of Calvin’s belief in the importance of his right action and the burgeoning Civil Rights movement. He contrasts these with the wrongness of Calvin’s father’s decisions and the frighteningly racist community that surrounds them.
