THE HARDER I FIGHT THE MORE I LOVE YOU written and read by Neko Case
At the center of Neko Case’s memoir, THE HARDER I FIGHT THE MORE I LOVE YOU, is her tumultuous relationship with her mother beginning when, at eight, she learns that her mother has died, only to later discover that she is alive and has only fled her life (and her child). Much of Case’s life is affected by poverty, neglect, and trauma balanced by the caring of neighbors and her continuous passion for horses and music. While many have led ragged lives like this, what makes Case’s memoir unique is the freshness of her views. Each simile is whole and new making one want to pause and consider. While I listened to this audio and Case brings alive the lyricism with which she sees, I think this bears a “reread” so that I can slow down and savor her very individual expression on the page. You can find out more about this book and the audio at the purchase link below.
