The winter of the dollhouse

THE WINTER OF THE DOLLHOUSE written by Laura Amy Schlitz and read by Laura Knight Keating

Laura Amy Schlitz’s THE WINTER OF THE DOLLHOUSE is a story in two parts, each complimenting the other. The human story tells of 11-y-o Tiphany Stokes who suffers from lacking true connection at her new school and baby-filled home. That’s until she meets an elderly woman, Hungarian Szilvia Neni, who knows how to listen and shares Tiph’s love of dollhouse dolls. Confidence and confessions, truths and understanding build this intergenerational best-friend relationship. Fine writing and balance of pets and doll perspective balance the intensity with a lighter point of view but the power of the story feels to me like it’s carried in the human pov. The audio makes a wonderful translation with Laura Knight Keating’s who is sensitive and expressive of both human and other worlds. Find a link to the book and audio in the purchase button below.
