Under the Same Stars

UNDER THE SAME STARS written by Libba Bray and narrated by Jeremy Carlisle Parker, January LaVoy, Major Curda and Libba Bray

I started the new year with a wonderful long listen, Libba Bray’s UNDER THE SAME STARS
The three readers describe teens from different eras and settings in this intertwined audio. January LaVoy transitions facilely from the accented dialogue of Hanna and Sophie, two 1939 Polish teens, to unstressed voicing of their risk-taking amid Hitler’s threats. Jeremy Carlisle Parker transitions listeners to 1980 Berlin picturing alienated Jenny who’s adjusting to a move from Dallas to West Berlin and passionate German-accented Lena, a queer punk rocker, who she comes to love. Parker also represents the softer storytelling tones of an older German woman. Major Curda communicates the growth of Brooklynite Miles whose 2020 lockdown introduces him to social justice and solving two girls’ mysterious disappearance sixty years before. All narrators heighten their dramatic readings as the story’s tension increases and connections become clear. Libby Bray cheerily reads her Author Note which voices a belief in hope.
