Untangling: The Long Complicated Process of Dying with Alzheimer’s (Chapter 38)
From helping five friends die, I’d come to believe that there was a process as one transitioned from “here” (life as I knew it) to “there” (the place that comes next). Within that process I saw friends lose connection with the reality I knew. Only years after my mother’s death did I realize that she had been in an extended journey of moving from “here” to “there.” Why didn’t I see it then? I was too busy dealing with drama after drama, one of the worst being my mom’s removal from her assisted living to a geriatric psych ward.
