UPROOTED: A MEMOIR ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR FAMILY MOVES BACK, written and illustrated by Ruth Chan

Ruth Chan’s UPROOTED: A MEMOIR ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR FAMILY MOVES BACK recounts in graphic novel format her journey, as at 13 she moves from a life and friends she loves in Toronto to her mother’s home of Hong Kong. In pictures and in words, we see the strangeness of not fitting in with Cantonese-speaking family, at her German school and a urban life. We see too the intimacy she has with her father in their sweet Talk-to-Talk connections at bedtime, monochromatic frames showing his tales of his family’s escape from China because of Japanese invasion in 1944. Gradually we see Ruth’s happy adaptation and breakthroughs in language, urban comfort, new friendships and the relationship with the mother whom she feels nags her relentlessly. Find more information about the book in the purchase link below.
