SANTA’S FIRST CHRISTMAS written and read by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Sydney Smith
SANTA’S FIRST CHRISTMAS is an intriguing collaboration. First, there’s the work of writer Mac Barnett. His humor is often free-wheeling but I experienced it as a sense of goodwill and wit in the story of elves who decide that Santa really should experience the pleasure he brings to others. I know Sydney Smith to have illustrated quite sensitive serious books, but in this he creates a pervading warmth as Santa experiences the thrill of tree, lights, and licking the cookie dough spoon. And then there’s the collaboration of elves who work so hard on the event that by the end a doubting Santa declares “We should do this every year.” “And,” finishes the author, “now they do.” An ending that embodies all the joy of the season. Mac Barnett brings out the humor of the tale in his reading. You can find out more about this book and the audio in the purchase link below.
