WOODY’S WORDS: WOODROW WILSON RAWLS AND WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS by Lisa Rogers, illustrated by Susan Reagan
II’m a big fan of picture book biographies, especially those that make sense to children. I’ve seen many beautifully, wonderfully told books about writers, but I question the interest of children. Writer Lisa Rogers and illustrator Susan Reagan have composed WOODY’S WORDS: WOODROW WILSON RAWLS AND WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS, a book that serves as a enticing introduction to a writer whose work they can read. The tone of illustrations and voice have a sense of Wrawls’ Oklahoma rural growing up, but don’t shy away from plain facts like the writer’s time in jail or his ongoing desire to write a book about a dog.
