My parents’ divorce wars caused lengthy nightly phone calls. I couldn’t hang up and my tears caused Ron pain. His wish for me to hang up was a sanity my enmeshment wouldn’t permit. A mistake causing physical pain became comic relief and “never hurting you intentionally” was oft quoted when our marriage faced hurtful moments.
